President of the XXII Congress of the Spanish Society of Medical Surgical Laser
-How do you assess the current state of laser technology in the field of medicine in our country?
-Since the laser began to be used in medicine in the sixties in children with vascular malformations, much progress has been made in terms of its medical applications and almost all specialties use it in pathologies that require a precise approach. Spain has always been at the forefront in Europe as far as laser is concerned. We must emphasize that it was a Spaniard who used a laser for the first time in Europe to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia. Our country is also a benchmark in the world due to the large quantity and quality of scientific communications related to the use of low power lasers to promote the regeneration of damaged tissues. Regarding the treatment of varicose veins with endovenous laser, a Spaniard was the first to describe and perform the technique in the world together with another colleague in the United States.
This denotes that our physicians have not only been interested in learning new technologies, but that they have been able to bring benefits and new applications to it. For this reason, Spain is a reference to be taken into account by other professionals dedicated to this field.
– What specialties has the congress addressed?
-The XXII Congress of the Spanish Society of Surgical Medical Lasers (SELMO) has been addressed to all medical specialties that use lasers in one way or another. It is a way of learning everything that is being done in each medical discipline, in order to better inform our patients. For example, in pediatrics much progress has been made in the treatment of vuscular malformations in children.
